Congregation Ahavat Olam meets monthly for Shabbat services, typically on the 2nd Friday at 7:30-8:30, in a beautiful space in a church in Glenview.
Our participatory Shabbat service is filled with beautiful music. Rabbi-Cantor Nancy Landsman and Cantor Joanna Lind are usually accompanied by a pianist, and occasionally they are joined by additional experienced and talented musicians. Embracing traditional melodies, with a mix of contemporary settings sung in Reform congregations, we use the newest Reform prayer book, Mishkan T’filah. The prayers are written in Hebrew and transliteration, and our services include a good balance of English and Hebrew prayers.
The sermons frequently take the form of lively discussions about the Parasha (weekly Torah portion) or other issues of interest. After services, we gather for Kiddush and Motzi (reciting the traditional blessings over the wine and bread) for Oneg Shabbat, when we enjoy spending time visiting with each other while eating delicious refreshments that people volunteer to bring.
Our High Holy Day services follow a similar format and are unique in that the Yizkor and Neilah services (the concluding services on Yom Kippur) are included at the conclusion of the Yom Kippur morning service. More information about this year’s holiday services on our calendar page.
The beauty of our worship services is that people feel welcomed in our intimate gathering of individuals who enjoy being together. Our Rabbi and Cantor lead our services in a way that promotes a feeling of warm fellowship. When new worshippers join us for services, they tell us that they appreciate how friendly and welcoming everyone is, and how much they enjoyed our participatory services.
All are welcome to attend our services. To receive additional information about our High Holy Day services, the Zoom link for virtual services, and updates for when and where we will resume worshipping in person, please provide us with your name, phone number and email address.
